Mr. Kerns has been a Database Engineer at the University of Maryland’s National Study Center for Trauma and
EMS since 1990. During this time he has gained considerable experience in the manipulation and use of large
datasets relating to motor vehicle crashes and injury. He has co-authored a number of journal articles on
highway safety and has presented results from independent research projects at local and national health and
injury conferences. He is currently the project coordinator for the Crash Injury Research and Engineering
Network (CIREN) project funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and for the
Comprehensive Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CCODES) project funded by NHTSA and the Maryland Highway Safety Office.
